I am privileged to be the principal at Barwon Heads PS and welcome you to explore our website to begin to discover more about our wonderful school and the amazing students we have the pleasure of teaching.
Established in 1891, Barwon Heads is an exciting and continually evolving school that is committed to improving student learning outcomes. We strive to provide specific programs and opportunities for all learners that delivers all elements of the Victorian Curriculum including the Arts, Physical Education, LOTE and STEM (Science, Technology).
The community aims to work together, at all times, to live by our vision statement that captures the essence of empowering students to reach their full potential. We are committed to the continued creation of a vibrant and harmonious community of responsible learners who have a confident belief in their ability to learn grow and succeed through the development of Character Strengths that are inherent in successful people.
Staff, students and community at Barwon Heads Primary School actively seek to live, learn and interact with each other, modelling the character strengths in every situation. We grab with both hands the opportunity to add value to the learning opportunity of our students by connecting their learning to our unique environment.
Our school continues to grow and currently has approximately 500 students in Prep to Year 6 across 21 classes. The school is an important part of the village and our aim is to connect the students, their families and the community.
This school and its community continue to set benchmarks by which others can be measured. In attending Barwon Heads PS your children are part of a school known for its innovation and dedication to providing an education that reflects the needs of our children. We welcome all families to our school and wish to extend our invitation to you to be an active and informed member of our school community.
Our students participate in learning opportunities that reflect our consistent and proven approaches to teaching reading, writing and maths that are all driven by high impact strategies that all teachers are competent in delivering. Added to this are opportunities for developing world knowledge through our Inquiry Learning and project based learning linked to the community.
Technology is also an important part of our school. To this end, every classroom has network and internet access and a range of devices to access with our prep – year 3 students using school devices and our year 4, 5 and 6 students iPads as part of our BYOD (Bring your own device), program.
Our school has a well-established Transition Program that offers students and parents opportunities to familiarise themselves with the school in the lead up to enrolment. Our Well-Being officer meets with new students regularly to support the transition process once your child begins school. This is a great way for parents to feel comfortable in a school environment and to give their children a great start to their education.
With our large, spacious and attractive grounds and modern buildings, we are the envy of many schools. The grounds are used to advantage our students in our many programs designed to improve basic skills and ‘future’ skills in meaningful ‘real’ ways. Since 2011 we have added a large modern gymnasium, a state of the art learning environment (2016) for our year 5 and 6 students, refurbishment of existing classes (2017) and extensive redesign of our outdoor spaces to cater for the different play and social needs of our students.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge that the students at this school are what makes it tick. We are so lucky to be working with children who are ready to learn and look forward to school. I promise all families that as a school we are here to provide a quality service for your children. The staff at our school always do their very best and like me appreciate the opportunity to work at the Barwon Heads Primary School.
I look forward to building a relationship with you to ensure your child has a positive experience at school.
