To the School Community
As mentioned in the Compass Post you would have received on Thursday the focus of my Blog will be about Transition Kinder – Prep year 6 -7 and what happens in between!
PART 1
Transition between stages of formal education as well as between schools is an important part of the lives of young people and their families. The transition experiences that children at Barwon Heads PS encounter are from K – Prep, between year levels and from 6- 7, a description of our processes will be described below.
Based on my experiences and professional learning about transition I recognise that there are some key elements that as a school we must ensure exist for all forms of transition mentioned.
- Staff are aware of the key information about the stages of transition the children experience. This is supported by the DET who provided clear procedures for the way in which transition occurs. We access and distribute information about effective transition to staff involved.
- A Primary contact person is for transition is identified at each stage. At our school we ensure this by allocating clear roles and responsibilities for staff to ensure a rigorous and effective transition occurs. Raelee Wilding for our Kinder – Prep, Kristen Dillon for students enrolling at BHPS from other schools and the year 6 team the year 6-7 process. Both Ms Booth and I are also involved closely with the activities related to transition connecting directly with the parents to support their understanding.
- Strong Connections are made with our key community members. Our school has worked diligently to develop positive relationships with Bop Bop Karrong as well as other early childhood education providers that our students come from. We organise transitions discussions with each organisation and involve them in our 3 transition sessions leading into the new school year.
There is also a commitment to enhancing the transition for our year 6 – 7 students with meetings with representatives from schools our students transition to encouraged and invited to meet with us to gather information about each of our year 6 students.
Year 6 students will receive their placement confirmation from government schools during next week.
To coincide with this I thought I would take the opportunity to invite parents to a Transition Q and A to be held on Friday 10th of August at 3:45pm at the Barwon Heads Football Netball . Focus on year 6-7 transition and what to do to help you choose a school that suits your child.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
